Tips on hiring the right people
When you depend on other people for the success and reputation of your company, you need to make sure that you have the best. More and more human capital is being recognized as either a company’s greatest asset or its greatest liability. Employees represent your business to clients and customers. As a result, it is extremely important that they are knowledgeable, and are positive about the products or services that you offer. Although hiring the best people can be difficult, there are things that you can do to ensure that attract and keep the right people.

Be Prepared

Before posting the position, sit down and really think about the job. Prepare a complete summary of the major duties that are required for the position. You should then take a realistic look at the qualifications necessary based on the duties. The key to setting qualifications is find what is necessary to perform the duties of the job. For example, asking for a University degree for a job doing only basic clerical duties that pays little over minimum wage will not attract the right people. First, you will not find applicants meeting the qualifications, unless they are looking at the job on a temporary basis and by the time you train them, they will likely find something else. Second, it may detract applicants who are interested in the job from applying because they do not feel that they meet the qualifications.

You may know exactly what the job entails, but it is important that applicants understand the duties to ensure that you attract people who are interested in the tasks of the job. In addition, new employees must understand what is expected of them.

With a clear picture of the job, you should then ensure the compensation level is in-line with the industry, the qualifications that you are requesting, and is feasible for your budget. Although setting a salary can be difficult, you must keep in mind the people you are trying to attract. You can leave some room for negotiation and discretion based on experience, but you should have a clear range in mind.

Interview Testing

Short listing candidates based on resumes can be difficult, but selecting candidates based on one or a couple of short discussions is even more difficult. Interview results alone depend a lot on the personality of the person. Some people can talk their way through any topic, and others would rather prove themselves through their work. Depending on the position requirements, the job may be more suitable for the latter. In order to truly find the best candidate, you should find some type of testing to be done during the interview. For example, if you are looking for a bookkeeping position, have candidates balance a daily transaction report, or make an income statement. In most positions, there are technical aspects that can be tested. In doing testing, you will be able to observe a number of things including, ease of completion, timeliness of completion, attitude toward proving themselves, and ability to do what they say they can do. This could be an extremely useful tool in hiring the best candidate for the position.

Take your Time

Although this may be near impossible, finding the best candidate may require more time. After your interviews and testing, if you are not 100% sold on one candidate, don’t just settle for one of the candidates there. With a large amount of training time, hiring someone new can be a large investment. In addition, the employee represents your company, and can have an impact on existing employees. As a result, you want to find the right person the first time.

Finding the right person involves looking at the position carefully, proper interviewing skills, and time. This may seem like quite the effort, but the right person can bring in a positive attitude, new or better procedures to the job, and can really surprise you with their skills.
